Universal Standard Dune Linen Shirt Dress Review

With rising temperatures and the desire for comfortable clothes that fit well and can be worn on repeat, I looked forward to trying out this linen dress. I’ve always steered clear of linen because of the lack of stretch, and because the fabric can feel scratchy. The Universal Standard linen has a touch of stretch, is lightweight with nice drape, and soft without sacrificing the cool breathability that is linen’s trademark.

The Dune Linen Shirt Dress has short sleeves, a hi-low hem, and a subtle side slit. The buttons go all the way down, and as an extra bonus, there are 2 snaps between the buttons at the bust to ensure there’s no pulling or gaping. And as with most Universal Standard items (like their amazing new jeans), there are super functional pockets. This is a piece that can be worn multiple ways and throughout the seasons, dressed up or down.

4 Ways to Wear a Shirt Dress:

1.On its own: Perfectly polished with no-fuss, wear with any shoes you want. Can’t get easier than this!

2.Styled over a dress: I wore this dress open over another favorite US piece, the Foundation Tank Dress. I’ve raved over and over about the foundation pieces, and will continue to do so. The fabric is so soft and stretchy, and is the base for so many outfits. I added casual sneakers and was ready to go run errands.

3.Easy topper with jeans and a tank: When you feel like you want an extra layer to a tank top and jeans, throw on the shirt dress. I’m wearing it with the Foundation Tank Top and Joni High Rise Curve Skinny Jean.

4.Add a belt: Adding a belt is a simple way to switch up the silhouette of the dress from A-line to more of a fit-and-flare. Dress it up even more with your favorite heels and handbag.

Universal Standard Fit Notes

As someone who is beyond standard plus sizes (above a 24), I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate the inclusivity and fit of Universal Standard with their 00-40 size range. So many times, I put on an item of clothing and hold my breath in anticipation of it not fitting, and not being able to size up. This is never the case with US. With this shirt dress, I steadied myself when I slid it on, thinking the buttons would pull at the bust and at the hips. Instead, it draped beautifully. I remembered then that it was a US piece, and of course it fit just as all my other favorite US pieces do. I’m 5’10 and usually fall between the US XL and 2XL. I’m wearing this dress in the 2XL. If you’ve never shopped US before, their size chart is incredibly helpful.
