Universal Standard Denim Review

In fact, I wear jeans so infrequently that my friends notice when I do. I’ve heard “oh look, you’re wearing jeans!” from no fewer than 3 different people before. I always thought of them as pants prisons and wanted to remove them as quickly as possible. So, to say I was hesitant at the thought of new jeans is an understatement – but I’m always down for a challenge.

Universal Standard sent me 2 pairs of their new denim based on the criteria I told them I looked for in jeans:

  1. The higher the waist, the better.
  2. If I find a pair that fits in the hips and leg, they usually slide down at the bum or have a gap in the back.
  3. I’m 5’10 but have short legs so an average length is preferred.

US sent me 2 styles of their Curve jeans, which are designed for people with at least a 10″ difference between their waist and hips. They feature darts in the back of the jeans so the waist sits flat on the back. They have jeans that are for people with less of a difference in the waist and hips – try the Etta and Stevie styles.

Review: Universal Standard Joni High Rise Curve Skinny Jean, 27″

I fell in love with these jeans as soon as I put them on. They had a lot of stretch, but still held their shape. The waist was as high as I like it, being able to come over my larger belly and sit completely flat against my waist and rear. The fit was unlike anything I’d tried before!

Also, these new jeans have super deep pockets. It was no problem to shove my extra large iPhone into them with room to spare. Who doesn’t love a good, functional pocket?!

Review: Universal Standard Donna High Rise Curve Straight Jean, 27″

It’s been so long since I’ve worn a straight leg jean since skinny legs have been prevalent for so long. The young folks tell me that straight legs are in, so I’m glad to have a pair! The waist and hips are the same great fit as the Joni Skinny Jean, but they have wider, straight legs for a looser silhouette.

Universal Standard Denim Sizing Notes:

I generally wear a size 28W pant from most stores. I ended up sizing down to the 26 because I preferred how they fit. If you’re unfamiliar with Universal Standard sizing, I’d suggest checking the size chart and then sizing down 1 – or ordering your size from the chart plus one smaller, and return whichever doesn’t work. These have a lot of stretch, so there’s definitely some wiggle room.

Also, check your inseam before ordering. I had these in the 32″ inseam but they were super long so I swapped for the 27″. If I were to get them again in the future, I may do the 32″ on the straight jean but then get them hemmed about 3″ so I could have a tiny bit more length on them. I like the skinny jean slightly above the ankle as they are now.
